Psychiatrist Analyzes Trump
By Leo Gura - April 5, 2025
This is a very good psychological analysis. I love psycho-analysis of Trump because traditional political analysis is insufficient to make sense of his behavior because we’re dealing with a serious personality disorder here. What’s needed is a deep understanding of how ego and how corruption works, which is my wheelhouse, and which is why I like to talk about Trump. Although I’m trying not to talk about him because I know he’s just fishing for attention and I don’t want to play into that.
I think one of the great disservices the media did over the years is to not offer enough psychiatric analysis of Trump. Nearly all analysis of him was political and cultural when it should have been psychiatric. Because the politics around Trump have always been secondary to his personality disorder. But there is a stigma in the mainstream about psycho-analyzing subjects from a distance. But in the case of politicians it is necessary because psychology drives everything.
The key insight to Trump’s behavior is that everything he does, he does to maximize attention and feed his need for narcissistic supply. Trump is like a drug addict chasing the high of attention and power. It doesn’t even matter if it’s negative attention, he decides policy based on how much attention it will generate to feed his pathetic, love-devoid ego. This is why putting a malignant narcissist into a leadership position is the dumbest thing imaginable. And since a narcissist of his caliber is unable to admit any wrongdoing, the more mistakes he makes the more he will double-down, causing things to spiral horribly out of control. And unlike his first administration where there were a few adults in the room to reign in his ego, now the Republican party has completely capitulated to his ego, which is really, really dangerous.
